Transitions Part 1: Independent Living

At the family meeting a few weeks ago, Mum’s Allied Health team made the decision that Mum’s rehab progress had flattened out and so it was time for her to transition. This week, Mum and Dad moved into an Independent Living Unit at SACU to trial a permanent carer relationship.

The units are a part of the facility and allow patients who are considering transitioning home to see if the sole carer option is feasible.

I admit I’m a little disappointed that SACU has made this decision while Mum is recovering from a UTI (her NINTH!) and has a broken pelvis. She’s been in a lot of pain and confusion and I feel they should have waited until she’d recovered before assessing her recovery as having plateued. Having said that, Mum has made excellent progress for someone with her kind of stroke and it’s testament to the early intervention method of rehabilitation.

The independent living unit will be a challenge for Mum and Dad but is an excellent test run to see if Dad will be able to physically provide Mum with the care she needs.

Mum and Dad will be in the unit till the 9 July.

Thinking of you both and wishing you great success in this new venture. Rome wasn’t built in a day, or two weeks in this case, and I’m sure there will be lots of blue air, tears and much laughter but whatever decision you make at the end, it will be the right one and you’ll move on from there.
Love and hugs to both of you,
    Isobelle
