Mum can successfully transfer into and out of Dad’s car!

Such an amazing achievement, we decided to put it to the test today and take her for a spin in Dad’s CRV.

Of course, Dad’s car is higher than your average vehicle and that’s the only reason Mum can do a pivot in and out. Getting into and out of a normal sedan is still beyond her but Dad’s CRV is a perfect height for her to twist onto the seat with the aid of another person and a wooden block.

After a Saturday of sleeping, Mum was still a bit tired this morning but we were determined to get her up and showered and out into the SACU gardens for her porridge. Then Dad decided to be more adventurous and get her out into the world without the trouble (and the expense) of a wheelchair taxi.

Mum has been practicing transfers but has never been entirely successful. This morning, she nailed it and, once she was safely ensconced in the car, it seemed a shame to waste the achievement. She and Dad set out without quite knowing where they were going, while I went to the airport to pick up Rick, Jen, Caitlin and Clare who were going with me to the Island for a week.

We decided it’d be nice to go to the Fish Inn at the Rockpool for lunch. Mum, of course, went here for her Mother’s Day lunch and so we knew it wouldn’t be crowded and that it had good wheelchair access. We looked at the amazing view while munching on Fish Burgers (except for Mum who, of course, had a steak) and having a chat.

Mum was happy both to be out and to have the “missing two” with her at the Rockpool (Rick and I couldn’t make it to Mother’s Day).

It was a lovely outing and another positive step toward Mum’s comparative independence.
