First up with the good news for today: the speech pathologist assessed Mum this afternoon and said she is able to move to normal fluids, including a normal cup of tea. Mum was obviously happy with that, although she’ll still use some thickened water sometimes.
The day started out a bit ordinary with some staff neglect of her basic care needs, but once we sorted that out things went well. I think one of the nurses had a nervous breakdown from her first experience in the stroke unit and had to be sent home.
The Doctor conducted her initial evaluation of Mum. She does have a urinary tract infection and will be treated for that. The Doctor agreed they want to wait before transferring her home to Brisbane because they’re concerned about secondary complications from such a severe stroke.
Mum will have her first physio assessment tomorrow at 10am.
Mum was more awake and alert yesterday and today than previously but she’s still tired and listless and doesn’t respond to certain things in the same way she once did. Once again, I’m getting together some footage of Mum so people can more fully appreciate the impact of such a severe stroke. It’s early days and we’re being optimistic but if there was no improvement Mum would never walk again and would remain blind in her left eye.
On a brighter note for everybody, my brother Doug arrived yesterday and will be with us for a week. My Uncle Bill flies in tomorrow. The local motel has a cottage at the back of its property with two bedrooms (4 beds), a full kitchen and laundry facilities. We’ll be cosy but comfortable.
