My name is Genny Ensor and a week ago, one day before New Year’s Eve 2014, I had a stroke. I don’t know if anyone reading this has ever had a stroke but, if you have, you’ll know what I mean when I say it was one of the most horrible experiences I’ve ever had.
I’m in the Acute Stroke Unit of the Frankston hospital at the moment, a short distance from Melbourne. Those of you who know me know this is not my home state. I was visiting my son for New Year’s when this happened and now I’m going to be living in Victoria for quite a while it seems.
This is not me writing this blog, of course. At least not yet. But it’s a long road ahead and I hope that in one year – New Year’s Eve 2015 – I’ll be typing this post myself with both my hands.
Once you read about my current condition you’ll know this goal is more than aspirational – and not just because I was a terrible typist before the stroke. I can’t move almost the entire left side of my body at the moment. In fact, right now, I can’t even recognise my left hand as being mine. But with hard work, rehab and the support of my amazing friends and family, I believe that I can do it.
See you all in one year.
