Mum has been in the Acute Stroke Unit of the Frankston hospital for one week now.
She did not have a great day yesterday. Since the stroke Mum has had a bad headache that seems to have progressed to severe. Of course, Mum is allergic to all morphine-based painkillers and cannot take any Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) because of her hypertension and the stroke itself. She’s completely reliant on paracetamol and codeine for pain relief and, as you can imagine, that’s not quite doing the job.
She’s exhausted, which we’ve been assured is normal, but is struggling with her blood pressure. Mum’s BP has fluctuated wildly in the past week; anywhere from 90/70 to 220/190. Last night her blood pressure finally stabilised around 140/85 and we’re all very happy with that.
Mum has started wheezing and is reporting a pressure on her chest. She’ll be going for a chest xray hopefully today or tomorrow. We’re also waiting on the results of a Doppler scan of her carotid artery.
The geriatrician came around yesterday and assessed Mum as not yet able to move to rehab due to her headache, drowsiness and BP.
I was hoping to start this blog with a more optimistic update. But Mum has good days and bad days and tomorrow is a new one. I’ll update tomorrow or if we have some news this evening.
