  • addendum – Mum’s new address

Mum is now in the Prince Charles Rehabilitation and Acute Stroke (RAS) unit at the hospital in Chermside, bed G4-A. This may change if she’s assessed to be medically stable enough to move to their Brighton facility. As always I’ll update the blog if anything changes.

  • Home adjacent

Mum was transferred to the Prince Charles this morning from the Mornington Centre, with an ambulance taking her to Tyabb airfield at 7am for a 9am flight. I’ve spoken to Dad this afternoon and Mum is safely ensconced in the sub-acute unit at the Prince Charles in Chermside. He reports she had a good flight…

  • And we’re off!

So it seems that Mum’s transfer has finally been confirmed and she’ll be leaving the Mornington Centre tomorrow at 7am and arriving at the Prince Charles in the early afternoon. I guess this is still weather permitting, and we’ll all believe it when it happens, but for now Mum is off to Brisbane tomorrow.

  • Let’s do lunch…and other things!

By Jennifer Ensor On Sunday, Caitlin, Claire and I (Jennifer) paid another flying visit to Mornington to see Mum before she heads off to the Prince Charles Rehab Unit in Brisbane – hopefully on Wednesday all things going well. We’ve been travelling down to the Mornington Peninsular from Sale once a week (6 hour round…

  • Take it slow (Let it go)

As has been mentioned before, Mum has some problems at mealtimes – mostly because she puts huge portions on her spoon and then keeps eating even though she hasn’t swallowed. Because her left side is paralysed, food can build up in her left cheek as she eats, leading Dad to call her his kangaroo. The rules for…

  • Still a big Yes! Yes! Yes! to Rehab

Or physio. I should probably be more accurate but Mum did always like that song. I drove back to Canberra yesterday; a long drive but there were some housekeeping things I needed to attend to and it’ll be good to have a couple of days to get those done. I’ll fly up to Brisbane next week…

  • Try to make me go to rehab and I say…

Yes yes yes!  At least for today. Mum had a great day in rehab today, despite being tired and sore all morning. Put in the gantry and ‘flown’ to the sliding machine, she managed a number of leg presses with her left leg at different angles, making it up past 10 degrees. She then went…

  • And now for the bad news…

Some frustrating news this morning as Mum’s transfer has been delayed for a week due to a combination of bad weather, public holidays and other bookings. We’re a bit disappointed obviously as Mum was looking forward to going and we were also looking forward to no longer living out of suitcases. I’ll let everyone know…

  • After a Stroke: Left-side Neglect

Mum’s right hemisphere stroke has caused complete left-side neglect. But what is left side neglect? To say that left side neglect means you’re paralysed down your left side is to miss the bigger picture of one-side neglect. Mum isn’t just paralysed and unable to see out of her left eye. Neglect following a stroke means…

  • Breaking News….

Good news today as Mum was cleared for transfer to Brisbane and the Prince Charles let us know they will probably have a bed for her by midweek. We still don’t know all the details but are very happy that Mum will soon be home (knock wood, cross fingers and all that jazz). I’ll write…
