It’s now time for Mum to head home.
As mentioned on the blog over the past few months, Mum’s Allied Health team is of the opinion her progress has plateaued and it’s time for her to transition. The current plan is for her to go home to the Townsville house in early October (about four weeks).
This doesn’t mean her rehab days are over: in her remaining time at SACU, Mum will be concentrating on wheelchair and transfer skills and she will be an outpatient after she’s discharged. The Douglas house has already had a bit of a renovation with a new friendly bathroom (the Happy Room) and ramps put in. Some of the doors have also been widened and Dad has managed to get a hold of a hospital bed and mattress for Mum at an excellent price.
As you know, Dad’s work is in Brisbane. Juggling caring responsibilities with work in another city is already a challenge. Mum and Dad are still investigating moving back down south to Brisbane so he can contniue working and they can access better rehab options for Mum. But even though her time in full-time care is over for now, Mum’s hard work isn’t. She will continue with her T’s three times a week and we’ll continue seeing an improvement over the next 18 months and beyond.
