No, really, drink your water kids

The plan was for Mum to have her final kidney stone operation last week. By coincidence, it coincided with my trip to Townsville to drive Mum’s car to Brisbane in preparation for her move.

So I flew up on Thursday night, was there to see her before she went under the knife on Friday and then drove out on Saturday. I was very disappointed not to be with her on Mother’s Day but, with the drive, it wasn’t going to work.

Friday morning we found out the truth: Mum did not have a kidney stone left to remove. She had a 2cm stone in her kidney and a second 1cm stone blocking her ureter. The surgeon did remove the 1cm stone and the stent… and then put a stent back in in preparation for more surgery for the larger stone. In fact, he estimated Mum is going to need at least two more treatments to break up and move that stone. Whether this will be surgery or something less invasive remains to be seen.

There was a period on Friday when it seemed as though Mum may be in Townsville for at least another month as the surgeon has booked the next surgery.

However, after a discussion with Dr Chapman today, Dad seems to be of the impression they’re still going to transfer her to Brisbane and she’ll need to get the stones treated down here.

So Mum could be down as soon as this week. For which we are… very unprepared. But the room nearby is available now so it seems it may all work out for the best.

Still, if you don’t want these kinds of problems, kids, then drink your water. Lots of it.
