Having “the stones” isn’t always a good things

It’s some semi-bad news that’s bringing this blog out of hiatus this morning.

Mum has developed some quite bad kidney stones. The doctors have been considering their options on how to deal with them for the past week. Surgery was dangerous for Mum even before she had the stroke and now is an even bigger risk.

Their hands were forced last night when the stones blocked her urethra while her body was trying to expel them. I don’t have many details yet but they must have been very concerned to consider surgery.

Mum was rushed in to have a cystoscopy ( endoscopy of the urinary bladder via the urethra) about midnight last night. They also inserted a stent to aid the passage of the stones. Dad sent me a text at 3am this morning to confirm she was in recovery.

Because of the operation, Mum is off her blood thinners and this is definitely high-risk for someone who’s already had a severe ischaemic stroke.

I’ll update everyone later today when I have more information.

And remember kids – drink your water. Lots of it.
